Local RESOURCES

Good for networking and connecting with more established professionals in the Austin NP sector.  This is a good way to find out from people already doing the work "what it's like" to work at such and such organization.

For anyone interested in development work, these monthly trainings over lunch are very well-organized and useful.

Good classes, conference, and monthly e-newsletters for local information and useful practical articles

  • Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations (TANO) /Austin Community College Center for Community Based and Nonprofit Resources www.tano.org  

Weekly e-newsletter advertises training opportunities, jobs, and local connections focused on grassroots groups locally and around the state.

  • Local newspapers for keeping your finger on the "pulse" of the town: Austin Business Journal, Austin Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman.  The NY Times may have better reporting, but the local papers keep you abreast of socio-economic trends, local people who are on the up and up, corporations settling in town and generally, what people in Austin are concerned with and thinking about.

NATIONAL RESOURCES

Lots of resources about nonprofit arts with an emphasis on advocacy, including  many publications and a good e-news digest that can be received for free.

The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action publishes a journal and hosts annual conferences that bring researchers together to talk all things nonprofit. Become a member!

This think tank produced a Philanthropy e-newsletter regularly

Billed as “the newspaper of the nonprofit world” it is printed every two weeks, and provides a daily e-newsletter

This site focuses on communications from grantmakers, and has some good resources for improving marketing and communication

The Bay Area nonprofit management support center is a leading edge organization with training, research, and field thought leadership. Good materials about nonprofit careers, succession planning, mergers and more

“Defining philanthropy for the 21st Century” COF has a variety of web resources and e-newsletters re grantmakers and philanthropy

This website is your portal to tax reports and other profile materials of all IRS 501-c-3 exempt organizations. Lots of good data there

Research and news about the nonprofits sector

Promoting “spirited discussion of nonprofit management”, this quarterly magazine has a great wealth of good writers and conceptual frameworks to guide management in the sector. Special fun is thesatirical columns by “Phil Anthrop”, and the short advice colum “The Nonprofit Ethicist”/ 

Good newspaper  billed as the “business source for the nonprofit industry”which is known for its annual nonprofit salary survey and other surveys and charts about the sector.

Magazine aimed at foundations, nonprofits and social entrepreneurs, with a business focus.

Volunteer management resources to share.

Urban’s mission says it “gathers data, conducts research, evaluates programs, offers technical assistance overseas, and educates Americans on social and economic issues — to foster sound public policy and effective government.” Lots of reports, data and resources.
